I have been fascinated with the world of things and structures for as long as I can remember. Growing up in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains, I was first exposed to building as we added on to my childhood home. I was mesmerized by the tools, materials and mechanics of constructing, and the magic of turning open space in to a safe and comfortable home.
After school, I returned to building as a means to support my self. I fell in with a talented group of carpenters, and spent the next ten years apprenticing in some of the areas most inspired homes. I was captivated by the sense of harmony and vitality that I found in spaces and things created with careful intention and skillful execution, and dedicated my self to understanding these practices and carrying them forward.
For the last ten years, I have spent the majority of my time in a small woodworking shop, making doors, cabinetry, and furniture, and offering traditional woodworking instruction to crafters of all backgrounds. My approach relies heavily on the use of hand tools, traditional methods of joinery and construction, and is guided by a deep understanding of the material, the craft, and its functions.
I believe that the things we make carry the energy that we put in to making them for their lifetimes. My intention through this work is not simply to fulfill utilitarian needs, but through a process that is guided as much by joy as by technical understanding, to bring functional and durable objects in to the world which offer a quiet, loving warmth to our spaces.
